Cova Tallada in Javea

Cova Tallada, located at the base of Cabo San Antonio is a partially man-made cave system, roughly 75m wide with an average height of around 15m, although at some points reaching up to 40m! The cave consists of multiple ‘rooms’, some dry and others filled with seawater. Originally created due to the extraction of desirable, rough stone, which was used in the construction of various local buildings, including the Church of San Bartolomé or ‘Inglesia de San Bartolomé’.

La Cova Tallada can be accessed by Javea but the main route and organised excursions depart from Denia. The caves can also be accessed via kayak or canoe, however it is important to note that the caves have restrictions for visitors in the summer months, made mandatory by the Generalitat Valenciana, from June 15th until September 30. To book an excursion between these dates, follow the link at the bottom of the page. Otherwise outside of the dates, the caves are freely accessible.

What to bring to Cova Tallada?

Sensible closed-toe footwear is a must as the terrain is somewhat uneven and unpredictable. The last thing you want is a sprained ankle or stubbed toe when exploring these magnificent caves!

Sun protection, be it a hat and sunglasses or a high SPF sunscreen is vital in the summer months, as the walk offers little to no shade or cover from the blazing Spanish sun.

Less is more! In some parts of the walk you will be going over rough, uneven rocks and added weight will do your ankles, back and shoulders no good! All you need in your backpack is some food, water and if possible, a first aid kit incase of emergencies. (Be sure to take any litter you bring, back home with you to be discarded properly)
