Javea new year`s swim

Xàbia will once again welcome the new year with a splash for a good cause, as the New Year’s Charity Swim 2026returns to Arenal Beach on Thursday, 1 January 2026.

The start of the new year in Xàbia is set to be both refreshing and meaningful, as the town prepares to welcome 2026 with one of its most popular winter traditions. On Thursday, 1 January 2026, residents, visitors, and brave swimmers will gather at Arenal Beach for the annual New Year’s Charity Swim, an event that has become a firm fixture in the local calendar. Combining festive atmosphere, community spirit, and a strong charitable focus, the swim offers a unique way to begin the year while supporting important causes.

More than just a symbolic dip in the sea, the New Year’s Charity Swim brings together people of all ages and nationalities who live in or visit Xàbia during the winter season. With colourful costumes, laughter on the promenade, and plenty of encouragement from spectators, the event transforms the often-quiet New Year’s Day into a lively social occasion. Each year, hundreds of participants and onlookers contribute, whether by entering the water or donating from the shore, reinforcing Xàbia’s reputation as a town with a strong sense of solidarity and community involvement.

Scheduled to take place at 1:00 pm, the 2026 edition continues a tradition that turns the cold Mediterranean sea into a powerful gesture of goodwill, reminding everyone that even the simplest acts can make a difference at the start of a new year.

A Festive Tradition with a Charitable Purpose

Each year, the New Year’s Charity Swim in Xàbia combines fun, community spirit, and fundraising. Participants, often dressed in colourful costumes, brave the cold Mediterranean waters in support of people and organisations in need.

Before the plunge, the so-called “sponsored swimmers” traditionally gather at the Lancashire Bruja bar, where they enjoy a quick drink “for courage” before setting off on a group walk towards the beach at around 12:00 pm. The usual meeting point is the Christmas tree installed on Arenal Beach, marking the start of the event.

Fundraising for Local and International Causes

During the walk to the beach and throughout the event itself, organisers Steve and Chrissie, accompanied by their festive helper elf, will be collecting donations from participants and spectators alike.

In 2026, all funds raised will be shared between three charitable initiatives:

  • Cruz Roja Jávea, supporting families within the municipality
  • Clinica La Vision, an ophthalmology project in Fort Dauphin, Madagascar, providing eye care for children and families
  • PC Highway, offering weekly assistance to more than 20 local families, as well as support for homeless people and urgent cases

Organisers stress that “every cent counts” and encourage everyone to contribute, whether by entering the water or donating from the shore.

How to Donate If You Can’t Attend

For those unable to join the swim on New Year’s Day, alternative donation options are available. Contributions can be made via a charity donation jar at the Lancashire Bruja bar, or by leaving donations at Humpty Dumpty Papershop (Jávea Park).

A Community Event to Start 2026

With a festive atmosphere, a starting horn to signal the plunge, and plenty of good humour, the New Year’s Charity Swim transforms the cold sea into a powerful symbol of solidarity. Once again, Xàbia’s Arenal Beach will be the setting for a memorable start to the year — bringing the community together in support of meaningful causes.
